It All Started with a Banjo and a Hurricane

Astor Ash Guitar Art Boards started with an old banjo and a hurricane.  My grandfather, Astor Ash, was born in 1895 and grew up in Appalachian Kentucky, where he played his banjo (pictured) on his front porch for friends and family.

After his passing, his banjo was stored in the attic of one of his children, where it was poorly cared for and decayed.  It was finally rescued from further damage by a family member who recognized the value of preserving not only an artifact of her past, but a story about her family's history.  Although safe from harm, it was no longer able to be played and lacked a place in the home, other than taking up space in a closet.

That is until a massive hurricane blew through Northeast Florida. Along with significant flooding and damage, several homes and businesses saw their wooden fences destroyed.  That's where I got the idea to use the naturally weathered "hurricane wood" as panels that could serve as an artistic backdrop to the instruments in my house and office.

They were named in my great-grandfather Astor Ash's name as a tribute to his banjo that has been in our family for over 100 years and inspired a way to honor the legacy of all musicians by letting their musical passion be visual art in their home and office.
